Enabling Quantum Technologies Through Advanced Materials and Devices.
Enabling Quantum Technologies Through Advanced Materials and Devices.
Development of next-generation quantum materials and devices technology such as superconductors, novel semiconductor structures, and topological materials for the fabrication of qubits, single-photon sources/detectors, entangled photon sources, and quantum sensing/metrological devices for applications in computing and communication. The project will develop III-V semiconductor quantum devices, high-speed electronics, and 2D quantum materials for photonic applications.
R&D Vision
To achieve long-term sustainability and innovation in quantum materials, the vertical emphasizes:
- Advanced Materials Design & Engineering: Development of quantum-grade materials through epitaxial growth, defect minimization, and interface engineering. The focus will be on the development of the existing repository of materials important for different Quantum Verticals and its future sustainability, and giving the technology edge and exclusive technology access for India in the Quantum Technology domain.
- Translational Research & Industry Collaboration: Bridging fundamental research with commercial applications to achieve high Technology Readiness Levels.
- Infrastructure Development: Establishment of national-level fabrication and testing facilities, ensuring accessibility for researchers and startups.
- Human Resource Development: Creation of specialized training programs to develop a skilled workforce in quantum materials and devices.
- Global Partnerships & Strategic Alliances: Strengthening collaborations with leading international quantum research institutions.
- Future vision to set up National Materials Innovation Network (NMIN): under NQM to synergize the QMD activity feeding the other 3 NQM verticals via Spokes & Spikes.
Mission
The Quantum Materials and Devices (QMD) Hub, aligned with India’s National Quantum Mission, is dedicated to advancing the discovery, design, and deployment of next-generation quantum materials and device architectures. The mission of the QMD Hub is to enable transformative breakthroughs by bridging fundamental research with scalable technologies, fostering innovation across academia, national laboratories, and industry. By focusing on engineered quantum materials based on III-V semiconductors and 2D material along with photonic device integration. The hub aims to build robust platforms that underpin emerging quantum technologies. Through collaborative research, capacity building, and translational development, QMD strives to strengthen India’s leadership in the global quantum ecosystem and contribute to technologically relevant, future-ready solutions.
